Tip wiping sponges serve two main functions:  to remove surface oxides which form on the tip, and to wipe the excess solder from the tip, exposing the tip point definition and offering the operator a well defined tip with which to solder.

Plato sponges are manufactured with all natural materials to exacting specifications.  Pure cellulose (a wood derivative) is used.  Cellulose is selected for its ability to hold many times its weight in water and for its resistance to abrasion and tearing forces which occur during the tip wiping process.

Plato sponges are designed to a thickness which will hold water for long periods of time and meet ANSI (J-STD-001B) for low sulphur content and fine porosity.

CAUTION:  Many "economy sponges" are manufactured with man-made fibers and materials typically found in non-industrial (household) type sponges. These sponges contain colorings, sizings, plasticizers, stiffeners, and other contaminants which will promote detinning and short tip life.
SYNTHETIC SPONGES ARE NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE AS TIP CLEANING SPONGES.
